Work with the irritating onsite team was continuing for a while and with little support from my stupid manager, I was just looking forward to closing the work as early as possible. However, one fine day, the onsite team, scheduled the call early in the morning, and my manager called me for attending the call. I was furious, as there were no prior communications and updates from the onsite team. On purpose, I joined the call a bit late and by the time I joined the call, the call got over and the onsite team requested me to get insights from my manager. Now, I was screwed even more further as my manager complicates the requirements shared by him, and he would share unnecessary insights irrelevant for the opportunity. As usual, I called him up to get the knowledge transition about the morning call, and he shared some rubbish insights and I double-checked with him about the exact client requirements. With no further update from my manager, I had no option but to work on the slides requested by my manager, and little did I knew that the exact opposite details were shared by the onsite team. Entry into the initial phase of lockdown
After completing my work at the end of the day, I logged off from my office laptop and was worried about getting back to the office after my long vacation. But, little did I knew that all my hopes would have vanished within a span of a few days and it did not change my life alone and shook the entire world. I took a long vacation with the plan of traveling to my brothers' place and spend quality time with family and children. However, with the recent Covid-19 pandemic getting close to all parts of the country, all companies were requesting their employees to connect from home and fortunately, my brother was also able to reach native. Initially, we were discussing that faraway place would be infected with Coronavirus, and with each day passing by, the impact was bigger than we ever anticipated. Within a few days, the entire country was put under complete lockdown and since I was on a long vacation, I did not have much impact on the lockdown. Final reminder to on-site team to get updates
So, for the second consecutive day, I and the offshore delivery lead have not got any updates from the on-site team and they haven’t even confirmed, whether our thought-process was on the right track to meet client requirements. With each passing day, both the delivery lead and I were getting anxious about the outcome, because I have my vacation planned in the next few days and the delivery does not want to extend for such a long time. The moment I entered into office with no updates from the on-site team and with no insight about the next step, I got a brilliant idea to have a discussion with my manager. Thankfully, I have kept my manger informed about all the processes happening and difficulties we face due to delayed/no updates from the on-site team. I also discussed my upcoming vacation plans and with no response from the on-site team, it is getting complicated to complete the service request as early as possible. My manager suggested dropping a note to the on-site team for the updates and further informing them that I would not be available post the next few days and the delivery team had to take ownership of completion. I was waiting until the end of the day to get an update and finally, I dropped a note to the on-site team that my manger suggested. Balancing between existing and new work
I have conveyed to my manager that I have already compiled most of the documents and only a few more updates to be made and it can be made by the respective team who was already working and has background about the service request. In addition, I was looped to support a new service request and the new team has already sent out escalation mails. My manager after hearing out this lengthy conversation, finally convened that he would drop a note to the new service request delivery leads that I am completely out of bandwidth. However, my manager did not even drop a single note and all he did was just talking and unofficial chat with the delivery point of contact. As each day passed by, the new delivery team was getting anxious and worried about the completion of the document before the due date. I had no other option but to support my colleagues for the completion of the document, that they were working on. Meanwhile, without detailing anything to my manager or my colleagues, I sneaked few hours of my time to the new opportunity and was trying to compile as much information as possible and I kept this so secretive that I didn’t even share the work in progress document to the new team. Unwanted redundant work
Meanwhile, when my manager was requesting me to put some effort on the slides to bring it into some shape, he has also made call to my teammate on weekend and requesting him to send some sample slides for reference. My teammate has no clue about the background nor actual work on the slide, he was sending few decks for my reference. I was in middle of all these chaos, as no one has exact background on the service request and purpose of the slides, but they want some information in the slides for discussion in the call. My point was, when we all know that service request was about to start and it will take multiple iterations & leadership reviews before it gets completed, then why do we want to work on unnecessary slides and complete nonsense stuff. Finally, based on my understanding of the service request, I have made some modifications, done some research and went through existing repositories for reusable contents in the slides and sent to the team for review. Headed for vacation with irritating opportunity
But, the initial days of my vacation was calm and quiet and no major update from the opportunity and suddenly in middle of my vacation, early in the morning I got a call from my manager requesting, whether I would be able to join a call for the same opportunity and I was shell shocked. Out of no options, I told I can join the call and would be on mute, as there was some carpeting work going on in my home. Finally, I joined the call and was on mute for a few minutes, later the call started and out of nowhere the on-site delivery lead started to question my manager, that what update has been made from my end for the last two or three days. For one time my manager supported me and was raising question to the delivery point of contact and the onsite lead, that what information has been shared to me and what was the action item pending from my end. Blasted by offshore delivery lead during the review
The offshore delivery POC and I were reviewing the slides and modifying it based upon the on-site team updates and in meantime I have also had scheduled a call with the offshore delivery lead for his inputs as well. Call with offshore delivery POC were going in smooth manner and was hoping the same to be with the offshore delivery lead. The call with the offshore lead started the initial two slides where the standard one and there was no much comment on it, he moved on to the other slides and was reviewing it each and every line and was validating it with me. As he moved on with the other slides, he was asking me the purpose of the slides and requesting me to check with all my team members and put in relevant slides. At one point he was completely furious and was checking with me what I was doing in the entire day and there was no much update to the deck than the older version, I was completely furious hearing it, how can he say that I have never worked on this slides? Iterative changes for opportunity from irritating POC
As called out in earlier posts at “G R Team Sites” that I have been assigned to work with one of the most irritating delivery person in the team and was left all alone as offshore delivery leader have clearly called out that support would not be available from offshore team. Initial calls were to add few slides to the deck, but later on, it went to changes to every part of it. At one point of time, I had to modify every slide with too many updates. However, with my skills and repository, I was able to close off all updates by end of the day with hope that there would not be any changes in the next day. Nevertheless, every day I would get new changes to be made and modifications to structure of the deck with new storyline. Continuing work with that irritating delivery team.
I have shared the decks they were looking for and even pinged in office communicator to validate the information and even got confirmation that these are the decks they are currently looking for and I closed the loop and started to my home. After an hour, my manager calls me and asks whether I have shared the deck with the team, and I replied affirmative stating that I have shared the deck with the team and have also forwarded the mail trail to my manager. The next day early in the morning, I get call from that account lead stating that my manager has assigned me for this opportunity and there is a call scheduled in next 30 mins and asking me to join the call. Since, it is the first time ever I was working with this team, I didn’t want to ruin my reputation with that team and joined the call. After few mins of the call, I understood the urgency in completing the opportunity and they wanted to close the opportunity in next two days and it seems lot of work to do done. Taking office call on travel
Exactly on Friday evening I was assigned with two different opportunities, one opportunity had no work as the delivery team need to work on estimates and another opportunity had very short turnaround time and on first day I had to share questionnaire with the client. However, on that Friday evening I was planning to drive back to my native and initially the call was scheduled early in the evening and at last minute the call was postponed even more later in the evening. Now I have no options left other than taking office call while driving back to my native and I was sure the reception would be bad due to travel. I joined the call from my car and initial call discussion was all about introduction and possible scope for my team and when exact time had come for my team to raise question, the reception failed miserably and I had to stop the car on side of the road to take the call and to my rescue the delivery expert had joined the call and was raising the questions. Leadership review of opportunity with new delivery expert
After making changes to the deck, I shared the deck with leadership as suggested by this new delivery expert with whom I was working for the first time and she was too hesitant to spend even few minutes on this opportunity. The changes were minimal and it hardly took few minutes for me to make the changes and I have completed it and shared it with the leadership for review. The leadership review call was scheduled for the next day and I was hoping everything would be fine. But all turned to be on the air, once the leadership saw the deck they were questioning about the solution part left, right and center, the delivery expert tried to manage and there were lot of changes suggested by the leadership team. At last after suggesting lot of changes, the leadership gave green card for the deck to be shared with accounts team for submission to the client. Stupid enough to use two laptops
To summarize, I wanted to narrate my experience during Chennai rains at 2015 and how stupid I have been by using two laptops. Since I had no office during the first day of heavy rains, I opened up my MacBook Pro and started to stream YouTube videos to my TV’s chrome-cast. The maid came late at around 10 AM and as usual she cleaned up the home, washed used dishes and made rice and left for the day. During her work at my home, we were discussing how horrible the rain was and hoping it would end within few hours and everything would be normal by tomorrow morning. Now I was all alone at my home, my parents were at native and I used to stay alone at my Chennai home. Maid left at around 10:30 AM and I asked her to be safe as the rains are getting heavier as each hour passes by. I was enjoying my leisure time at my home watching some random YouTube videos casting from my MacBook Pro to TV.
